Big Canoe Animal Rescue (BCAR) is a 501c3 non-profit animal rescue located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains between Jasper and Dawsonville, GA. We are a small no-kill facility that has been providing care for homeless dogs and cats in our immediate area for over 35 years. In addition to the vetting, care, and adoption of the animals housed at our shelter, we provide outreach to other pet owners and pets in need within the community. Our outreach program works with local food banks, the Dawson and Pickens County Shelters, as well as community members needing a hand with their pets from time to time. And if that wasn’t enough, we are ALL VOLUNTEER!! Every dollar donated to BCAR goes directly to the care of the animals!! We hope you will come visit and learn more about what we do.

Patsy
Patsy is not your typical hound! She is quiet, low-key, and she never howls!! Her favorite thing to do is to curl up on a couch next to her humans, with her head on a lap. As a senior girl, she likes shorter walks and lots of treats, but she still shows lots of spunk and a zest for life! Her previous foster Mom says she is house broken, slept well at night, and enjoys Netflix. When Patsy was found, she was diagnosed with a cancerous lower colon tumor during her medical evaluation. She had surgery to remove the tumor and is on a daily maintenance medication. She recovered quickly and seems to be feeling great and enjoying life.
Scooter
Full of kitten energy, this spunky little guy is quite entertaining with his playful personality. Always super sweet and purring up a storm, he gets along well with the other cats and will be a great companion in his forever home. Scooter is available, and applications are being accepted now. Interested adopters can meet Scooter by appointment at his foster’s Big Canoe home.
Missy
Since bringing Missy to BCAR, she has been diagnosed
with and is being treated for Cushing’s Disease and a thyroid disorder. Both are managed with daily medications. She has also gone from weighing just over 100 pounds to a healthy weight of around 50 pounds while in our care! She loves a good walk and has great manners on her leash. She is very calm and enjoys snoozing in the sunshine after her morning walk.
